The La Rambla in Barcelona

Barcelona is a beautiful city in Spain. It is the first time I have visited this cosmopolitan city in Spain with my daughter. I am glad we took the short Euro summer trip this year.  A bit hot but fun!

I chose Barcelona over Madrid because I wanted to visit Montserrat since it is in Catalonia. So, while the intention was to visit the Monserrat Monastery, why not tour Barcelona as well so I would be hitting 2 birds with 1 stone.

There are plenty of things to do and see in Barcelona alone. Fortunately, I chose to stay near the Plaça Catalunya area where famous tourist spots are walking distance from our hotel. One of the nearby attractions is the La Rambla.

La Rambla is a long stretch of tree-lined pedestrian street with plenty of shops, hotels, kiosks, and establishments to see. It is around 1.2 kilometres long. It borders the Barri Gothic and the El Raval areas in Catalunya.

You can also find the famous La Boqueria here. It is their open market selling fresh fruits, candies, beverages like Spain's famous Sangria, and of course, the very sumptuous chorizo in many shapes, sizes, and forms!

We're lucky to have seen many things in this place. It is worth visiting when you are in Barcelona. Be mindful though of your belongings because there are plenty of pickpockets in the area due to the influx of tourists who easily fall prey to these petty crimes.

Here are some pictures I have taken in La Ramble. Do include it in your itinerary when visiting Barcelona.

Plenty of souvenir shops and food kiosks can be found in the whole stretch of La Rambla.

This is a church along La Rambla.

The many variety of merchandise found in La Boqueria. My daughter and I loved the fresh fruits!

Global Events That Are Worth Travelling For In 2015

Even though 2015 is coming to a close, there are still some amazing events going on around the world. Because we all like to do a spot of travelling here and there (understatement of the year!), I thought I would make a list of the events still to come in 2015. For all of my readers that are impulsive enough for a spontaneous trip abroad, you just might be able to catch a few if you book now.

If you don’t or can’t, there is always next year.

The Rugby World Cup

Let’s start with the Rugby World Cup because the final is tomorrow! Okay, rugby might not be everyone’s cup of tea, especially if you come from America. But, the spectacle of the World Cup is something not to miss. And, because we know who are playing – New Zealand vs. Australia – we know that it is going to be a huge occasion. After all, it is the two biggest and best teams in the world playing on the biggest stage. If that isn’t worth travelling for, I don’t what is!

Mexico Grand Prix

Talking to a few of my friends, they seem to think the Mexican Grand Prix will be a bit of a bore. How have they come to this conclusion? By watching Lewis Hamilton cruise to victory in Austin last week. Okay, the Championship race is over, and no one can catch Hamilton with only a few races left in the season. Still, the experience of watching the best racers in the world’s fastest cars is one that will be amazing regardless of the title situation. Plus, a Grand Prix is to return to Mexico for the first time in twenty-three years, so you know it is going to be special.

National Rodeo Finals

Did you think that rodeo was an American hobby that they did in their spare time? Well, it is much more than that because rodeo is huge in the United States! In fact, if you want to go to the finals you will have to buy national finals rodeo Vegas tickets now before they sell out. The tournament kicks off in the first week of December from the 3rd to the 12th in the City of Sin. Quite simply, with cowboys trying to lasso bulls and thousands of screaming fans, it is one of the most surreal experiences in the world. In my experience, these are the experiences that are worth the hassle.

New Year’s Eve

Yes, New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest events on the social calendar. Yet, everyone I talk to seems to hate New Year’s Eve with a passion! I can see where they are coming from because New Year’s does tend to be the biggest anti-climax in the world. But, all that changes when you go abroad. Spending the New Year watching the fireworks in Sydney or celebrating Hogmanay in Edinburgh is special. Just think of it as one big, gigantic party full of alcohol, dancing and fireworks!

That’s just what’s left this year. If you fancy going one step further, you can start planning for 2016!

Amazing Reasons You Should Go For an Adventure in the Wilderness

A lot of people love the idea of holidaying in the great outdoors while others hate it. I have to be honest, the idea never really appealed to me. I was worried that I had become too used to my creature comforts, and that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy anytime in the wilderness. But, I was, of course, completely wrong. And I’m here to help you change your mind, and to convince you why you should go for an adventure in the wilderness.
I mean, of course, you’ll need to be sensible and prepared. Safety is paramount, and you will have to figure out tips for a safer camping trip. Being out in the wild is not something you should take lightly, but can be hugely enjoyable. These are some of my top reasons why you should go for an adventure in the wilderness.

Push Your Boundaries
Perhaps you’re the sort of person who always likes to play it safe. I can relate because I used to be like this when I was younger. But the brilliant thing about an adventure in the great outdoors is that it encourages you to push your boundaries. You’re going to need all the relevant gear for an outdoor adventure to help you do this. So make sure you visit Ridgemont and have a look at what they have on offer. You need to be tolerant and understanding of things you would never normally encounter. And this can be a great way of increasing your experiences and pushing your boundaries. By the end, you’re going to be glad you decided to do it.

Bond With Friends
I would always advise you to make sure you take people with you if you go on a camping trip. The wilderness can be treacherous and lonely. And it’s important to have people you trust around you. Another huge advantage is the fact that it will give you the perfect opportunity to bond with friends. You will share experiences and achievements that are unique. And this will help to strengthen the bonds of friendship you already have in place. It’s a brilliant way to become stronger friends with someone.

Do Things You’ve Never Done Before
There are many things in life that I feel are important. And one of the big ones is making sure you try new things. Experiencing something you’ve never experienced before is crucial. It can really help you to grow and evolve as a person. So you need to make sure you try to do this whenever you can. An outdoor adventure will give you the perfect opportunity to do things you’ve never done before in your life.

Take a Break From Routine
It’s vital to take a break from the routine and mundanity of everyday life. Holidays and breaks from formula matter. They help us to get our minds clear and they make life a little more interesting. Being out in the wilds and having to fend for yourself is a great way of taking a break from the norm. It’s something completely different that you may never have done. And it’s important to experience changes from normal life. It makes everything more interesting and enjoyable.

camping-142309_640.jpg
So, these are my reasons for taking an adventure in the wilderness. It’s something that I suggest you try to do as soon as you can. It’s something everyone should experience at least once in their life. Try to do this as part of your next planned break.

Essential Tips For A Safer Camping Trip

A lot of people get put off camping for a variety of reasons. Some just don’t like slumming it, but a big factor is the issue of safety. It’s understandable - after all, it’s only a thin sheet of fabric between you and the outside world. And, there are a lot of dangers involved in the activity that you just don’t have to deal with in a hotel!

However, if you count yourself among these people, would you change your mind if you knew how to be safe while camping? In this guide, I’m going to give you some great tips on how to have a safer and more enjoyable camping trip. Read on to find out more.

Know your escape routes

First of all, excellent planning is essential for any camping trip. You should research where you are going so that you are aware of how to access emergency services should you need them. Bee or wasp stings, slips and falls, and, of course, snakes can all cause issues. If they do, the quicker route you take to a hospital, the quicker the injured party will recover.

Arrange meeting points

If you are traveling in the wilderness in a group, there’s a good chance one of your party will get lost. A phone is obviously the best way to resolve this issue. But, so you aren’t relying on a signal, you should also arrange meeting points at the start of any journey. Rivers are a great marker, as it narrows down the choice of direction. Plot out several points on a map, and make sure everyone has a copy!

Remove temptation

Your food smells - and it smells great to any animals that might be around. Now, this isn’t all that scary if you live in a country where the biggest wild animal might be a badger, but if it’s a bear? That’s a different story. So, keep all your food sealed up in airtight containers or bags, and keep it out of sight.

Drink water

The human body is remarkably resilient, and it can go a surprisingly long time without food. It’s a different story for water, though, and you need to stay hydrated. You should bring plenty of water with you and keep it safe, and it’s also advisable to bring a portable water filter. That way, if you get lost somewhere, you will be able to purify any water from any source, and know it is safe to drink.

Torch and batteries

When you are camping away from the bright city lights, it is going to be dark. Very, very dark. So, make sure you bring a good torch with you - and plenty of batteries to keep it running. It’s no fun if you need to take a toilet trip in the middle of the night, so bring some light with you to ensure you don’t have an accident.

As you can see, there is a lot to think about when you are planning a camping trip. But, put these tips into practice and you should have a perfectly safe trip, and have a great time camping. Enjoy!

The Easy Way To Travel The World On A Budget

There’s nothing better than packing up for a long trip around the world. Whether you’re planning the best vacation of your life, or a year-long mega trip, you always get butterflies in your stomach. You’re about to embark on a wonderful adventure that will take you to new cities and cultures. You’ll eat fantastic food, and meet new people along the way. The only thing that holds you back is the cost. Traveling isn’t cheap, but there are plenty of ways to bring the cost down.

Traveling is as expensive as you make it. If you stay in luxury hotels, and choose the expensive flights, you’re going to eat into your budget. But, if you’re willing to work a bit harder, you can shave costs off at every stage of the journey. We’ve been around the circumference of the world more than once, and we know how to travel cheap! Here is our best advice.

The clever use of air miles

Most travel bloggers and experts refer to this as ‘travel hacking’. It’s a way of maximising your loyalty points and air miles to secure free flights and cheap accommodation. The interesting thing is that you don’t have to travel a lot to build them up. Most of your points can be earned on the ground. Simply use credit cards that give you the most rewards. Then use them in the most cost-effective way. (Usually long-haul flights and hotel discounts).

Save on accommodation

Typically, your accommodation is the most expensive aspect of your trip. Finding a place to stay every night puts a big hole in your budget. But, don’t worry, there are lots of other options, if you’re willing to work for them! First of all, use AirBnb to rent apartments rather than pay for a hotel. If you’re really strapped for cash, use companies like CouchSurfing, to find a place to crash. If you’re doing a long tour of the USA or Europe, we also love the idea of driving an RV. You can take them anywhere, and sleep in comfort at the side of the road. Perfect for long road trips. Touring the US in a travel trailer will save you a fortune on hotel bills.

Save on flights

You don’t have to choose the first flight you come across. In fact, if you do, you’ll probably pay a fortune for it. There are hundreds of cheap options out there, you just need to know where to look! Use websites like SkyScanner to compare the cheapest options. You can even call up the airlines themselves, and negotiate the cheapest ticket.

Make money along the way

Last of all, you can make up some of your lost budget along the way. If you’re planning a long adventure, spend a few weeks working, and pocket some extra change. You can blog your way around the world, and monetize your site. Alternatively, you can pick up an easy job in a bar or restaurant for a short while.

It is possible to see the world on a budget. Don’t let money hold you back!

Scary Bridges in Illinois

Few days from now will be Halloween. People who love the adrenalin-pumping activity of ghost-haunting will certainly enjoy the thrill of seeking new places to visit and check out for some ghouls-haunting.

Haunted houses are already a cliche! How about haunted or scary bridges in Illinois? Why Illinois? Well, Illinois is filled with plenty of weird and mysterious places dating as far back as early 1800s. Some stories have been circulating for a long time and others maybe new or just some rumours. Whatever it is, Illinois is packed with weird places to discover and if you love thrill - venture to the mysterious and haunted bridges of Illinois.

This list is just a few of the scary bridges found in Illinois and a brief description:

1. Crybaby Bridge, Monmouth

Story circulating about this bridge is that a mother drowned her unwanted infant under the bridge. People say that they can hear a baby's cry when passing the bridge.

2.  Witch Bridge, Clarksdale

There are rumours about a family's fate who lived in a small cabin near the bridge. Story about the family is that the father killed his family and hung himself. There are also stories about a zombie dog guarding the cabin near Anderson Cemetery.

3.  Airtight Bridge, Coles County

The bridge got its name for the aura of "stillness" the bridge exudes especially when locals claim that vehicles will stall when approaching the steep hill leading to the bridge. It is as if there are more air than gas in their tank. Also, few decades ago, a decapitated body of a woman was found near the bridge.  The case was never solved and has remained a mystery over the years.

4. Bessie Little Bridge, Ridge Street

The ghost of a pregnant lady named Bessie Little frequents this haunted bridge as locals claim. She was murdered while she was pregnant here by her boyfriend who was also her killer.

5.  Tindle Bridge, Fremont

The ghost of a murdered lady roams this area and cries for help. Another victim was found across the field near the bridge.

There are plenty of other bridges in Illinois that will surely scare your socks off! Venture and beware!

My Guide To Making The Most Of A Trip To Italy

I am a real travel lover, as are my family. This summer, I spent a couple of weeks travelling around Europe bonding with my teenage daughter. While we were away, we spent some time in Italy, which got me thinking about how amazing the country is.

Italy is somewhere that I love; it’s just such a beautiful place. I’ve been lucky enough to visit this amazing country a few times and have loved each city I have been to. Italy is crammed full of fantastic things to see and do, which can make it hard to know what to do while you are there.

italy.jpg

That’s why I want to share a few tips and ideas for making the most of a trip to Italy, with you, here:

See as many places as you can

Italy is a country that has so many beautiful cities and towns to explore, so if you can, aim to see as much as possible. Obviously, how many areas of the country you can travel to will depend on how long your trip is. The longer you are on vacation for, the more time you will have to explore.

Milan, Florence, Venice, Rome, and Naples are all must-sees, so if you get the chance, make sure to visit them all. Ensure that before your trip that you plan where you will visit, as well as how long you will stay in each place for.

Stay somewhere amazing

Often, when we visit Italy we stay with family, but if you can afford it, there are plenty of amazing places to stay. If you are travelling as part of a larger group, you will find that renting out a large villa can be surprisingly affordable.

From beautiful guest houses in Milan to Tuscany holiday villas, there are many types of accommodation to choose from. In many of Italy’s cities, you will find hostels, which are a great option if you are travelling on a budget. So even if money is tight, you should be able to find accommodation that is suitable.

Taste the local food

By all means eat in the restaurant of your hotel, but if you want to experience the real Italy, you need to taste the local cuisine. Before your trip, take some time to research all the best locally run restaurants near where you are staying. That way, before you travel, you will know where all the most authentic places to eat are.

If you are unable to afford to eat in restaurants, make time to visit lots of street markets. One of the best ways to sample the nicest local dishes is by visiting street markets - the food is both affordable and delicious. Before your trip, Google when the street markets are held where you are going, so that you don’t miss out on experiencing them.

Speak to the locals

When it comes to experiencing a place properly, I have found that the key is to speak to the locals. Often, there are some amazing things to see and do that aren’t in the guidebooks, which is why asking the locals for advice is important.

If you want to make the most of a trip to Italy, taste the local food, visit the most amazing places, and most importantly, do lots of research before you go.

Alternative Modes Of Transport For Your Next Vacation

The most wonderful thing about traveling is the destination. But the journeying between places is pretty awesome too. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to sample some of the weirdest and most wonderful modes of transport. Often, I'll do anything to get me from A to B. Admittedly, some of it is boring, like waiting in a departure lounge for a delayed flight! There are many ways to get around so I thought I would put together my favorites for you to sample next time you travel:

Speed
For speed, you can’t beat a plane. It’s been more than 12 years since Concorde retired, but it has left a legacy. It’s the plane to beat when it comes to speed. For now, our journeys to the other side of the world will have to continue to take us twenty-four hours or more. But once you’re there, why not enjoy the speed of a jet ski across the Bay in the Cayman Islands? Beautiful hot weather and plenty of beachfront activities to enjoy here.

Luxury
If you want to travel surrounded by some of the most incredible luxuries in the world, then you need to find a yacht for rent. Sail around the resorts in Dubai, or make a celebrity entrance on the French Riviera. With gorgeous beaches and marinas in some of the hottest destinations, a luxury yacht could be exactly what you’re looking for. Perfect for dropping in on the world’s rich and famous.

Class
To arrive in style, you should travel in style. One of the most beautiful modes of transport is the train. And the classiest train in the world has to be the Orient Express. Overnight travel on this world class train is usually booked up well in advance. Sadly, it’s not something you can just hop on at a whim. But for the happy holidaymaker, this could be the trip of a lifetime. Gorgeous accommodation and first class dining make this a dream vacation.

Economy
Nothing compares to a good old fashioned hike for the economic traveler. Your own two legs can carry you twenty miles per day with the right footwear. This is ideal when you want to venture into the wilderness and be at one with nature. Take shortcuts across fields, clamber over rocks and mountains, or even wade through the river. Waterproofs, blister pads, and a large backpack may be all you need for an incredible travel adventure.

RV
For the ultimate road trip with your pals, you have to hire a big old RV and head out to the great American Highways. There are thousands of miles of roads to choose from. With countless amazing destinations, the American road trip is the travel dream of millions. Always best with some company, and some idea of where you’re headed!

I love traveling, and I like to do something different every time I head out. Yes, I love traveling in style and luxury. But I also like to get the legs working, especially if I’ve had a long-haul flight to get there! Where will you travel next?

Milan, Venice and Barcelona in a Week

Bonding with my daughter this summer for our mini-Euro trip was the best decision I have made to spend my bonus money. To some, it may not even be a good decision because there are bills to pay. I couldn't care less about the bills. Money will come and go but the time I spend with my daughter is more precious than money can ever buy. So, I decided to spend the bonus for this mini-Euro trip and my daughter and I can actually vouch for this - WE HAD FUN!

Milan was the first stop. We stayed with relatives in Milan for 3 days. My hubby's cousins took us to the usual spot like Duomo, the Galleria and nearby places of interests we've seen the first time we toured Milan in 2008. However, this time, my daughter and I climbed the Duomo to see the Golden Virgin Mary on top of the church roof. Well, the experience was very enchanting but climbing up the stairs when you're not physically fit (I'm not an active person) had me gasping for air sometimes. I need to really, really work out because when you travel, there are lots of walking involved. I have just realised how "not physically" fit I was while climbing the stairs. It wasn't very steep but I lost count how many steps we have climbed to see the majestic Virgin Mary on the roof top. I'm glad my daughter was there to cheer me on and gave me encouragement to keep going because I was already throwing a hissy fit. I just had to tell myself it was a sacrifice I wanted to offer for the Lord so I needed the extra strength to climb the last few steps.

Seeing the top of Duomo is a must when you visit Milan. You'll get a bird's eye view of the town centre from the top. Aside from the great view, you'll see the Golden Virgin Mary, the details of the Duomo spires, and other sculpture that was there that time we visited.

Going down was a breeze. You now have an option to use the lift (and guess what, we did!) or the stairs. I wish they had installed that while going up especially for the elders who would need help climbing.

We had snacks at the nearby Galleria and went in the middle part of the Galleria where the peak of the glass dome is. Rumour has it that when you stand in the middle of the glass dome and make a wish, it will come true. My daughter and I wished and let's see. Hmmmm...

We walked around Galleria and the nearby places of interests then took the train back home. We slept early for our Venice day trip by car.

June 13 was Venezia day. It was a long drive from Milan. I think it was almost 3 hours and we had several stops in between to rest and grab snacks in Autogrill. I like the Autogrill because it has plenty of merchandise and the deli is fab! There are plenty of Autogrill along the way and I lost count how many I've seen.

Finally, Venezia (Venice) was on the horizon. Seeing the cruise ships around the port and the smaller yachts signalled the entrance to the famous Venice. We parked near the cruise ships port and walked towards the main entrance to Venice. We took the ferry to take us to San Marco rather than make pit stops elsewhere. San Marco is one of the famous sites to visit in Venice and we wanted to see it right away. From there, we just walked and visited different alleys and checked out shops. We had some snacks in a small deli near San Marco. We even got lost at some point because we didn't carry any map and relied to our GPS in the phone which was not much of a help if you are not familiar with N, S, E, W directions. We finally found our way back to San Marco Piazza and decided to just walk along the main canal route so we wouldn't get lost again. It was very hot that day and much as I appreciate the beauty around me, I could only take so much "heat" and we all decided to head back to the main train station of Venice which is also the main entrance.

It was another long drive back home and we left around 5:30 p.m. The sun was still up so we just took one pit stop to another Autogrill to refresh and unwind. We reached home almost around past 9:00 and amazingly, the sun was still up so we felt like it was not yet late.

June 14 was just a rest day as we headed to Malpensa Airport Terminal 2 in the afternoon. Our flight to Barcelona was not until 6:30 a.m. the next day. I have decided to book a night's stay at Moxy Malpensa Milan Airport because it was just in front of Terminal 2. We didn't want to cause any inconvenience to our cousins as they have to work the next day. The hotel was superb! I would book there again.

We checked out at 4:30 a.m. to give us ample time to have breakfast in the airport. The hotel was just a mere 3-5 minutes walk from the Terminal 2 of Malpensa Airport where we would board for our EasyJet flight to Barcelona. There were plenty of people already at that time so walking wasn't scary. Amazingly, there were some luggage trolleys outside the hotel's entrance door so we grabbed one and the walk was convenient for us. It was a bit rainy and dark but the place was already buzzing with people catching their flights and the nearby offices made the area ok. There were ample lighting as well on the posts so walking from the hotel to the airport terminal was ok.

My daughter and I decided to have our mini-breakfast inside the airport as soon as we passed the immigration and before we headed to the boarding gate. The flight left on time and was just more than an hour before we landed at El Prat Airport in Barcelona. Ola Espana!

June 15 to 18 was our intended stay in Barcelona. As soon as we arrived, we followed the signs leading to the baggage carousel and headed to the nearest exit. I was a bit surprised that we didn't go through immigration anymore. It's been a while since I travelled to Europe so the borderless travel concept seemed so foreign to me.

We looked for the Aerobus ticket booth so I could exchange the ticket voucher I bought online for our return trip bus passes. We boarded the Aerobus, and we arrived at Plaça Catalunya in less than 45 minutes without any traffic jam. From there, we just walked to our hotel.

The rest of the day was spent walking around Barcelona's famous plaza. More details of out trip in separate posts.

We had a marvelous time and wished the vacation was longer. We are definitely going back to Spain and next time we will visit other places like Madrid, Sevilla, and probably even go on a side trip to Lisbon.

There's another Euro trip in the offing but maybe next year when I figure out when due to my daughter's school roster.

4 Ideas For Fitting Travel Into Your Hectic Life

If you are a regular reader of my blog, then you will know that I plan on doing lots of travelling in my life. In fact, in a few short months, I will be heading off to travel the world. I cannot wait for this adventure, it should be an amazing experience.

I know how lucky I am to be able to travel, as so many people don’t have the chance. For many of us, when it comes to exploring the world, life gets in the way. Simple things like money, families and jobs can be the reasons that many people don’t get a chance to travel as much as we would like to.

travelling.jpg

However, when it comes to exploring the world, these things don’t have to get in the way. Regardless of what’s going on in your life, there are plenty of ways you can fit travel into it. Okay, so you may not be able to jet off into the sunset right now, but these four ideas will allow you to do so, at some point in the future.

1. Find a job that enables you to travel

If you want to travel but also want to build up a career, why not find a job that allows you to travel? The best thing about this is that you won’t have to sacrifice your career and will be able to see lots of amazing places.

When it comes to finding that perfect role that includes travel opportunities, you will be surprised at how many options you have. From working as an executive assistant to being a flight attendant, there are so many options to choose from. If, like me, you love to write, you could always consider working as a freelance writer. That way you could get paid simply by writing while you travel.

2. Get married abroad

Getting married might be a long way off, but if travel is something that you are passionate about, getting married abroad could be perfect. There are so many amazing places that make great destinations for weddings abroad.

The great thing about this is that once you get married you can spend two or three weeks travelling as a honeymoon. It might not be a five-month extradition, but it’s still a great way to get out there and see the world.

3. Do a study year abroad

If you are still studying at university but are desperate to travel, consider doing a study year abroad. Obviously, this isn’t an option for all courses. But most do offer you the chance to take a year our for work experience or study, both of which could be done in another country.

Often, if you choose to take a study or work experience year abroad, your student grant will cover most of the cost. So you can enjoy living and studying in a new place, without having to stress about money.

4. Work abroad

Instead of starting your career in the UK, consider looking for a job abroad. That way, you can live in and explore a new place, without having to worry about money and a career. Plus, working abroad for a few months is a great way to enhance your resume.

Obviously, if you are going to work abroad and don’t speak any foreign languages, you are going to need to work in an English-speaking country. America, New Zealand, and Australia are all good options for this.

When it comes to fitting travel into your life, it can sometimes feel impossible. However, there are always ways to get around the things holding you back.
