Spending Time Abroad As A Family Without Falling Out

Creating a family holiday without arguments doesn’t start when you get in the car or arrive at the airport. It begins way back at the planning stages. Be sure that every member of the family is considered and allowed to have a say. This goes for when you go, where you go and what you plan to do there. If one person is excluded, you’re at risk of them spending the whole time complaining. Children aren’t the only ones guilty of doing this- adults do it too!

There is a good chance that you won’t be able to please everyone 100%- but that is life! Just be sure that the ones who feel a tad disappointed know that you will do their thing next time. If two kids wanted Florida and one wanted New York, and you chose Florida? Then find a way to please the one who wanted New York. Maybe you could let them plan a half-day itinerary one day. Giving them a project and something to focus on will help distract them, and point them in a positive direction.

Once you are on your holiday or adventure, it is important to keep everyone busy. Yes, this may just mean busy relaxing! But while relaxing in the sun can be great fun for adults, kids can find it really boring. Plan for this in advance, and counteract it by heading to a place with a kids club. Alternatively, look into some different activity holidays designed for families. As they are designed with families in mind, there will be something to please all ages. There will often usually be an opportunity within these activities for some family bonding. This is always a bonus. It could mean that not only do you spend time together without arguments, but you also get on better than usual! It could help you find some common ground with your kids too. Plus, you can show that mom isn’t as weak as they thought, or dad not as boring!

We’ve covered making the time abroad suit everyone, and involving all in the organization. We’ve also mentioned what you should do with your time. Finally, let’s touch upon keeping the family dynamic happy.

Often, we spend only pockets of time with our entire family. So, we might only see one another at breakfast and dinner, for example. However, during time abroad on a holiday, you might see each other a lot more. While this can be a blessing, it can also lead to spending too much time together. Counteract this by ensuring everyone has their own space. If you are sharing a hotel room, book two separate rooms. Considering hiring a holiday home, so that teens can have their own room away from their parents. If you are camping, go for three of four smaller tents over one big one. Sometimes a little distance can help keep everyone sweet! Plus, if a falling out does occur, individuals have their own space to go to in order to cool down again.

Travel Leave!

Yes! This travel blogger deserves a nice R & R with the family this coming 4th of July and Eid in the Middle East. The last foreign travel I did was with my daughter during our summer Euro vacation last June 2015. After that, it was just quick trips to Manila and the very eventful February 2016 trip back home that saw me crying over my mum's unexpected demise, few days after my daughter's 18th debutante dinner party for family and friends.

So yes, forgive me if I take this brief vacation very seriously because I need it badly. I need to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city life. I need to chill, unwind and see places  to recharge and hopefully, help me heal.

So, this travel blogger will be away from her fave lappy and will try her level best to avoid posting anything in-between (unless really, really necessary) from the 3rd until the 10th of July.

Places of Interest in Marienplatz in Munich

Munich is a lovely place to visit. There are plenty of interesting places to see and you can all do that using the Hop-On and Hop-Off bus plying the routes famous for tourist attractions.

Marienplatz is the town centre in Munich. We booked our Hop-On and Hop-Off bus tour from the Travel information centre in the plaza. And riding the Hop-on, Hop-off bus was a great way to see most of the sights without having to worry on finding our way around town and using the public transportation.

Munich has plenty of points of interests which were covered in our Hop-on, Hop-off bus tour. I am very glad we booked it because I don't know if we'd have enough time to cover much if we had decided to take the public transportation. There are plenty of eateries, food stalls and souvenir shops.

Marienplatz is an old town square in Munich, Germany.  Marienplatz stands for Our Lady's Square or St. Mary's Square in the town square which is a main square since 1158 in the city centre of Munich.

Attractions to find in Marienplatz:

Teddy Bear / Toy Museum

This is one of the places that we wished we visited earlier. It was closed already when we tried to visit. We were just few minutes late when the museum closed. Anyway, the Teddy Bear Museum houses plenty of collection of toys from some prominent countries. You can find more information about this place here:

The Rathaus

The New Town hall is a very famous gothic-inspired building in the northern part of Marienplatz. The Rathaus is the seat of the mayor’s office, the city council, and the headquarters of the city administration in Munich.

Glockenspiel

The Glockenspiel in the tower balcony of the Neues Rathaus is also world famous and worth seeing. Since 1908, figurines representing stories from Munich’s history twirl on two levels daily at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. (the 5:00 p.m. show is omitted from November through February). In addition to the well-known coopers dancers, the Münchner Kindl (symbol of the city’s coat of arms), and the angel of peace also make an appearance in the almost 12-minute-long spectacle. Christmas Market (Christkindlmarkt)

Munich is home to many Christmas market stalls during the holiday season. Marienplatz is one of the famous Christmas Markets in the world.

Mariensäule (Marian Column) in the square

The Marian column was erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War. Atop the column is a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven.

Fischbrunnen (Fish Fountain)

One of the famous meeting points in Marienplatz. It is found in the eastern side of the town square near the Rathaus.

Akihabara and the Many Cafes

Japan is one of our favourite destinations. We love Japan and the many sights to be seen. Not to mention, the trinkets, the oddity, the food, and the cafes to try.

I am very happy to have visited Tokyo last Dec. 2013 with my husband and daughter for a brief pre-Christmas get-away gift for our daughter. She loves Japan and anime stuff so much so visiting Japan as her Christmas present was the perfect choice. We were lucky enough to visit Akihabara, a nice area for cafe and cosplay lovers.

Akihabara has plenty of cosplay and maids' cafe for various types of people. It is also home to many action figure shops and souvenirs. During our visit, we didn't see much cosplayers because it was during the weekday. We saw some staff wearing costumes along the streets near the west side of Akihabara Station but we could not take picture of them.

The whole place is really interesting. We managed to spend almost an hour in one of the buildings with claw machines and those that dispenses capsule containers with toys inside. We did spend a lot there but the experience was worth every penny! We managed to get lots of kawaii trinkets too from those machines. And we also realised that people actually spend their time (and money) there for fun. I thought we were the only foreigners sucked in there out of curiosity. But the whole building is just meant for those machines or what the Japanese call as gashapon. It is quite addicting! I had to stop because I was spending way too much on the dispensing machines just to try my luck completing a set of miniature toys.

We strolled along Akihabara but didn't go inside the cafes. Some cafes were not open when we visited in the morning after our stop from Shibuya. It was fun to stroll along the many themed cafes and I bet, it would have been more fun if we went inside to check them out.

We also went to some shops with action figures for our collections. I managed to buy a toy robot (I forgot which one) for my brother.  Akihabara is also known as the Electric city.

Visiting Akihabara is just one of the many things you can do while in Tokyo. It's easy to reach by train.

Traveling or Not?

We are going back and forth with our plans to travel this December for winter escapade. The flights are not looking very good. Although my daughter will be here for more than 3 weeks, we want to take advantage of that long winter break so we can spend it somewhere. Initially, it's Seattle but I'm not feeling the place. Next, New York but the hotel rates are going crazy. Next, Los Angeles. The flight is looking full because it's the holiday season and we only have 1 flight in LAX.

So, it's either we all have a staycation this winter or try Osaka for a change. All I want to do is to go tan amusement park with my family. Just to unwind and get away from all the hustle and bustle of stress. A good playtime is much appreciated.

Let's see how the plan goes. For now, I'm open to any suggestion as long as we don't have to wait long for the visa to be issued. Japan issues visa quite fast than Schengen. Although traveling to the US is the most practical one because we already have US visas, we don't want to get stuck there because of our staff air tickets and no seat availability. Anyway, I am looking forward to any vacation I can have this holiday season, be it here in Dubai or outside. Any vacation or no vacation at all.

Osaka? Amsterdam? Orlando?

Well, my feet is itchy and I want to scratch it real bad. It's not fungus. It's just the travel bug, biting me real bad.

Traveling is my great way to de-stress myself. I have to travel somewhere every year, every quarter, and even every month, if only I can. I just feel happier when I am out and about, discovering new attractions, enjoying other country's culture and having a good bite of their  local cuisine.

Next year, I have planned tentatively several places as a gift to my daughter's 18th birthday in February. Unfortunately, we will be using staff travel tickets so getting seats are unlikely due to the high season. Anyway, just in case our Osaka doesn't happen in February, there is always April! Either it's back to Keukenhof Gardens or fly off to Orlando to enjoy Disneyland.

All these plans will depend if my daughter has enough vacation to spare and if my boss allows me to utilize my leave in advance.

Anyway, for now they are in the planning stages. I will be very upset if I don't get to travel anywhere in 2016. I will have to squeeze in a travel anytime soon or I will go bonkers.

Awesome Reasons to Visit San Diego, California

In the next few years, I have some incredible trips planned to places I've never seen before. Next year, I'll be seeing a lot of Europe, and I've got a South American tour scheduled for 2018. But I also love to reflect back on the places I have been to and recommend them to anyone who has yet to experience them. San Diego was one of my favorite places to see in California, for a lot of reasons. One of them is that we have family in LA, but that's probably not a great reason for anyone else to visit! If you think you would like to go, here are my top reasons to see San Diego.

Nan Palmero

History

I love exploring the history of the places we visit because it reveals so much about each location. San Diego is full of history, and has some great museums. When we visited a few years ago, we made sure to check out the Hotel Coronado, which is supposed to have a 19th century ghost! If you head to Balboa Park, you can find the Natural History Museum, Reuben H Fleet Science Center, and several more. You definitely won't run out of places to go and new things to learn.

Stylish Places to Stay

One of my favorite things about traveling is staying in lots of different accommodation. It's fun to get to stay in a hotel or a rented apartment, especially when you don't have to clean up after yourself! I like staying somewhere that has some character, and not just a boring hotel with plain white sheets. There are lots of beautiful places to stay in San Diego that are stylish and fun. For example, there's the Hotel Z, recently finished by hotel developer, Sajan Hansji, which is in the trendy Gaslamp Quarter. You can find great places to stay, whether you travel as a family like we do, on your own or with some friends.

Beaches

The beach isn't my favorite place, but I know that other people love them. And many beach-lovers say that San Diego has some of the best in California. There are lots of them, with miles of soft sand. And you can choose whether you want somewhere quiet or somewhere to party. Even if you're not a fan of beaches, you can spend a lot of time looking out at the ocean. You'll find some beautiful views across the city that everyone is sure to love.

Food and Drink

Trying new food is one of the best parts about traveling. I love going out to eat when we're visiting somewhere or sitting down for a cold drink when it's hot. San Diego has a huge range of different food, from Mexican to seafood, and cheap to expensive. There are plenty of food trucks too if street food is what you love. If you like beer, it's also one of the best places to go for craft beers.

San Diego is a great place to visit, and I recommend it to anyone going to California. Don't miss out because you're more interested in LA or San Francisco.

The La Rambla in Barcelona

Barcelona is a beautiful city in Spain. It is the first time I have visited this cosmopolitan city in Spain with my daughter. I am glad we took the short Euro summer trip this year.  A bit hot but fun!

I chose Barcelona over Madrid because I wanted to visit Montserrat since it is in Catalonia. So, while the intention was to visit the Monserrat Monastery, why not tour Barcelona as well so I would be hitting 2 birds with 1 stone.

There are plenty of things to do and see in Barcelona alone. Fortunately, I chose to stay near the Plaça Catalunya area where famous tourist spots are walking distance from our hotel. One of the nearby attractions is the La Rambla.

La Rambla is a long stretch of tree-lined pedestrian street with plenty of shops, hotels, kiosks, and establishments to see. It is around 1.2 kilometres long. It borders the Barri Gothic and the El Raval areas in Catalunya.

You can also find the famous La Boqueria here. It is their open market selling fresh fruits, candies, beverages like Spain's famous Sangria, and of course, the very sumptuous chorizo in many shapes, sizes, and forms!

We're lucky to have seen many things in this place. It is worth visiting when you are in Barcelona. Be mindful though of your belongings because there are plenty of pickpockets in the area due to the influx of tourists who easily fall prey to these petty crimes.

Salve and Hola Summer Trip

The travel bug has bitten once again and I have been very busy with work to finish so I can go on leave this coming Friday without any pending stuff to think of.

Yup, my daughter and I are off to Milan, Italy and Barcelona, Spain for a whole week. I have surprised my daughter about this trip because she thought we wouldn't be going anymore since she exchanged the Euro trip of 2016 to an 18th birthday debutante ball instead. Well, I don't think I can let this opportunity pass. I want to give this Euro trip to her, albeit, we are visiting only 2 countries this time due to my lack of leave credits. I would have loved to venture on other countries from East to West. Maybe next year.

We're staying in Milan for 4 days and will fly to Barcelona on the 15th of June via EasyJet. I wanted to go by rail but there are plenty of stops, changes and we won't be able to sleep within the 16 hours or so train ride.

I booked a not-so-fancy hotel near Plaça Catalunya. It's the last stop if we will ride the Aerobus from El Prat Airport in Barcelona. It's also walking distance to most notable tourist attractions in the area so it's a good place to start.

We'll be visiting Montserrat too and I'm mapping out our directions and budget as I plan to travel on our own so we can experience the train ride and the cable car ride towards the mountain top where the Monastery is and the Black Virgin of Montserrat's figure can be seen.

The weather is not as inviting anymore because it's hot. I don't like summer weather but hey, I plan to lose weight so maybe a lot of sunshine, perspiration and walking can do the trick.

So, I won't be blogging much again. I know I've been quiet lately. I haven't even posted much of the tours I have taken in Amsterdam and here's another one coming. Allow me to take it all in and will definitely share pics and posts about Barcelona. It's the 2nd time we are visiting Milan and we will be staying in my hubby's cousins' place. Hope to see the Milan Expo 2015 and Venice this time around. :)

Review - Element Times Square by Westin in Manhattan

Element Times Square by Westin is the second property we have stayed in during the Thanksgiving/Black Friday holiday last November/December 2014.  I liked this hotel in some levels but had to be very objective with my findings.

The property belongs to the Westin group of hotel chains and it is very chic and modern. However, not all properties are free from any imperfections. This hotel has some flaws too. Read my review below:

What I like:


The very comfortable bed! The firmness is just right and I slept like a baby even when there were revellers in the nearby pub.

The property is chic with modern amenities.
The long vanity desk.
The hi-tech phone and flat screen TV that boasts plenty of channel selections.

It has a fully functional kitchenette complete with microwave, top cooking range, big refrigerator, dishwasher, percolator, kitchen sink with faucet and running water, utensils with wine cork-screw, pots and pans and chinaware.

The bathroom is very spacious and clean.

The big closet complete with pressing board, flat iron, safe and mini-drawers.

The complimentary coffee, tea and water.
The grab-n-go breakfast. They don't have a wide selection but the sandwiches are enough to satisfy your morning hunger pang and they also serve cereals, juices, coffee and tea. You can get many sandwiches as you like too.
The complimentary coffee and tea at the lobby area where guests and visitors can warm off while waiting for their friends or transport.

The friendly, fast and efficient staff. I even borrowed a duct tape from one of the staff because our luggage broke and we had to do a quick fix as we were leaving that day. The nice lady staff searched in their stock room and lent me a full roll quite happily who even assured me that it was okay to be used. I hope I have taken down her name to commend her personally.
Fast check-in and check-out.
The location is fabulous. We were walking distance to the subway station, Times Square, Madison Square Garden, Port Authority, situated in the Garment district of Manhattan.
Pets are allowed upon request.

What I don't like:
I was almost at the point of giving this hotel my highest rating of 5 stars however, towards the last day of our stay, upon checking-out actually, I saw few hotel staff unload "heaps of garbage in huge, clear plastic trash bags" from one of the lift used to serve the guests of the hotel. What's very disturbing was, it was in plain view; it was done during the afternoon (approx. around 4-5 p.m., there were plenty of guests waiting in the lounge for their airport pick-up transportation or just plain lounging and I was one of them). I looked at the other guests' reactions and they were as surprised as I was, perhaps, even shocked because I was thinking, maybe they could have done it discreetly around midnight or wee hours in the morning when there are no people in the lounge. Another thing that put me off was the manner the hotel staff (I think there were 2 of them) handling the thrash bags from the guest elevator were throwing them on the floor and I could hear glass bottles shattering. They were doing it hastily. I was thinking, maybe they wanted to finish fast so the guests wouldn't see much of the fiasco. But too late. Damage had been done. If anything, cleanliness is one of my primary criteria in rating a hotel, hostel, or even a budget accommodation. It doesn't really matter if your property is posh or no-star at all but if it's clean and follows sanitary standards then I can overlook the other flaws of the property.

Another thing I didn't like in this hotel is the extremely slow elevators. We were billetted in the 9th floor. It took my hubby and I around 15-20 minutes to get in a lift. We had to go to the higher floors because there were barely available lifts passing our floor.

Lastly, the noise level of the nearby pubs could be heard even from our 9th floor hotel room. It was loud but I was just too sleepy to mind. Even then, if you stayed in the lower floors, then it would be louder.

I still give this a 4-stars rating per my recommendation because of the location,  the friendly and very accommodating staff, the comforts of the room amenities and the comfortable bed and the kitchenette that saved us mega bucks from dining out. This hotel is perfect for those who loves to go to the nearby Times Square and business travellers. Families and also those with pets can also enjoy this hotel as they allow pets.

Review - Beach Hotel by Bin Majid Hotels and Resorts in Ras Al Khaimah

Our trip to Ras Al Khaimah was an early celebration of Eid Al Fitr. It was also a nice moment to bond with my mom-in-law who had never set foot in RAK yet. The family had a great relaxing time in  Beach Hotel by Bin Majid Hotels & Resorts in Ras Al Khaimah. And who knew that a place like that existed if we haven't checked out Booking.com's offers? Good thing my husband saw the deal just in time so we booked few days before we went to RAK and we certainly enjoyed the weekend getaway.

Beach Hotel by Bin Majid Hotels & Resorts is a private beach-front hotel along the caramel-hued sandy coastline of Ras Al Khaimah. It's just few hours drive from Dubai. The property is a part of the Bin Majid Hotels' chain of properties. It has 4-stars rating with 136 rooms to boast.


What I like:

General and Service
It's a quiet hotel and gives me that very relaxing vibes.
The rate came with buffet breakfast.
The pool area is covered with plenty of covered seating areas where you can lounge and get covered. There were enough washing/shower areas so you don't drag the sand back to your hotel room.
There's a coffee shop and the restaurant also serves burgers + beers near the pool area! My husband certainly liked that!
The whole hotel has landscaped gardens and the lush greenery added a calming effect to the vacationers. Even the pool area is surrounded by trees and bushes.
The beach area is well-organized with elevated sun lounges so you really have a space to sunbathe or just sit back and enjoy the view of the sea.
The caramel-hue sand around the beach was so fine and we really enjoyed the beach area. It wasn't crowded in the afternoon towards sunset.
The Concierge agent named Susana was very friendly and accommodating. We were checked in in less than 5 minutes.
There's ample parking space for hotel guests and visitors.

Location
Just few hours drive from Dubai (approximately 45-60 minutes from Al Ghusais where we live to this hotel property on a Friday)
It's located just as you enter Ras Al Khaimah and it's easy to find. There is a signage before the flyover so you have to take the one at the bottom to turn to this property.
It's nestled in lush greenery in a quiet beach community. It's really ideal for a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Rooms
Rooms are adequate even for a family of 3. We booked 2 rooms (3 adults in one standard bedroom and 2 adults in the other standard bedroom).
The beds and pillows were so comfortable. This is one of the best sleep I have ever had in an hotel.
There were enough cups and glasses in the room.
The bathroom was spacious with a bidet and separate tub-shower area.
The vanity table is long enough to accommodate mine and my daughter's laptops.
The bathroom amenities were well stocked with enough towels for all of us.
I also like the fact that it has a hair dryer.

Food
The buffet breakfast has a very wide selection and we all loved it. We certainly enjoyed our hearty meals! Of all the places I have had eaten French Toast for breakfast, this is the only hotel where I really ate yummy French Toasts that were not so soggy and oily or buttery.  We had more than 2 slices each. It was that delicious!
We also enjoyed making our pancakes with the pancake machine. So cool!

The hotel also had selections for Arab and Far East Asian guests. You can choose some Indian food staple for breakfast if you prefer that.

What I don't like:
Considering the features in the room, I can tell it's an old one. The thermostat knob of the AC was antiquated that when I turned the knob to a low setting, it fell! I certainly don't know if I returned it properly that the room remained cold throughout even when the setting was high temp. It's because the knob was not properly aligned as I don't know which is which.

There was no rubber stopper in the bathtub so I was unable to soak.

The small mini-bar fridge leaked.

The cabinet sliding doors were hard to slide. They kept jamming at a certain point and they were a bit heavy for a cabinet door.

The rooms given to us were 231 & 232. 232 had a city/mountain view while Room 231 had a very small view of the beach from the side.  We requested for a beach view but since there was a group booking, we didn't get the adjacent rooms with the beach view.

No free wi-fi, not even in the lobby. Wi-fi connection for 24 hours is AED 80.

I recommend this property to families, groups and business travelers who are looking for a quick weekend getaway away from the city life. This property, albeit an old one, has clean facilities, friendly staff, spacious and clean rooms and a breath-taking view of the beautiful beach area of Ras Al Khaimah. I don't mind booking again as long as they give me a beach view next time!

Summer Sun and Sand at Ras Al Khaimah

Dubai's temperature is soaring so we decided to have a quick getaway to a nearby town of UAE called Ras Al Khaimah. It's less than an hour drive from Dubai. Sometimes, getting out of Dubai is what you need to unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life.

We saw some camels along the way. They're really majestic creatures.

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is a quiet emirate of the United Arab Emirates. It also has it's city centre but it pales in comparison with Dubai when it comes to the fast-paced lifestyle. It is more relaxing and calm in RAK.

We booked an overnight stay at Bin Majid Beach Hotel from Booking.com and got a very good rate with buffet breakfast for 2. The 2 standard rooms we booked for ourselves and our in-laws were facing each other so we got to see both sides of the hotel - the seaview (in-laws) and the mountain/city view (ours). I'll post the review of the hotel later. Meanwhile, let me just soak in the sun and sand for few more minutes before we check out and head home to a busy cosmopolitan city.

Ah, it may be the peak of summer but looking at the sea and walking on the beach kind of give me that inner peace I have been craving for. Sometimes, you just have to pack your bag and go... but don't forget your shades and sunscreen!
