Eyes, Nose and Mouth: Traveler's Tips for Sudden Sand or Dust Storms

Dust storms and sandstorms, which commonly go by the Arabic name "haboobs," are among Nature's most impressive and unnerving phenomena. Under seemingly calm sunny or slate-gray skies, you might look to the horizon to see a veritable wall of tawny shadow. Minutes later, your visibility's down to virtually nothing and there's choking grit everywhere.

These monumental clouds of low, fast-moving particles present real hazards to anyone caught unawares. Even as motorists are slowed or stalled and those inside trapped for the time being, people overtaken outside on foot or bicycle--or who must for an extreme reason venture outdoors--must be equipped to protect themselves.

Haboobs, Related Storms, and the Risks They Pose

Sandstorms and dust storms are most common in certain arid and semi-arid regions such as the Sahara and Arabian deserts, the Australian outback, and the drylands of the American Southwest. Actually, blinding clouds of similar nature may be encountered in other regions, too, as long as there's a lot of barren and exposed sediment--big tracts of plowed ground, say, or a tract of seashore dunes--and the requisite atmospheric conditions. They may be kicked up by the chaotic winds of thunderstorms or the gusts of a big weather front (the volatile boundary of two air masses). In their true desert strongholds, their leading edge can tower 1,000 meters high, and they can motor along at a frightening clip: up to 100 kilometers per hour.

Bits of sand or dirt lodged in your eyes aren't just a sensory annoyance: They can also cause corneal abrasions--scratches to that all-important frontal tissue that facilitates image focusing and protects the eye's interior. Your eyelashes and tears do much to keep out irritants in normal conditions, but the full onslaught of a dust storm is a different story. Meantime such airborne particles, breathed in, can irritate and dry out your nasal passages, throat, and lungs.

In short, a haboob--or one of its little cousins--is not an event to dismiss as an exotic novelty or a sublime expression of earthly forces (although that it is). If you're traveling in country that might generate such a disturbance, you need to be prepared to swiftly protect those moist and sensitive breathing passageways and those delicate ocular nooks.

Protection for the Eyes, Nose, and Mouth

Staying inside is the best means of avoiding the respiratory and ocular complications of a sandstorm. That said, if you must go out in the gritty maelstrom, or if you're caught outdoors by a fast-moving storm, there are a few precautions you can take to lessen the impacts.

If the contact lenses you ordered from Next Day Lenses or some other outfitter become irritated, take them out as soon as you can do so with proper sanitation and care and don a backup pair of eyeglasses. Dampen a bandanna or light cloth and wrap it around your nose and mouth; even better, strap on a facemask or respirator if you have access to one. You can also apply a bit of petroleum jelly to the nostrils to protect them from desiccation. To shield your eyes, meanwhile, wear close-fitting goggles.

Monumental shelves of dust and sand are certainly sights to see, but ideally through the security of a window. Seek adequate shelter immediately if you spot one approaching or are forewarned.

Tour Cebu - For My Second Trip!

I have long dreamt of taking a Cebu tour or two so that I can see all of the hidden beauties within the area. I had been to Cebu three years ago and I loved the time that I got to spend there, but I did not get to see all of the things that I knew were scattered around the island. I have begun planning my second trip and will be going on the options to tour Cebu that I have read about.

The one tour that I know that I have to go on is the bike tour. I really enjoy getting out into the open air on a bike and I think that getting to explore the off grid areas of the island will be awesome as an itinerary in a Cebu tour. I have to try to decide how long of a tour I want to take. They are offered in short trips that will only take a day, but they also offer multiple day trips lasting as long as thirteen days. I know that I will not go as long as thirteen days, but more than one might be nice.

I would also like to go on a city tour. I did not get to see much of the city when I was there last. I had a hotel that was right on the beach and I spent much of my time soaking up the sun and enjoying the sandy beach that was just footsteps from my room. I have read about some of the attractions that are to be enjoyed within the city and would love to explore many of them. The place that I would like to see most in the city is Taoist Temple and other must have and must experience Cebu tour. I look forward to shopping the different stores and collecting many souvenirs from the shops.

Once I have had my taste of the city, a countryside tour sounds perfect. Spending a day viewing stone churches, town plazas and bell towers as well as the other architecture built during the Spanish era would be quite memorable. I can already picture myself wondering though the area with my camera capturing images that many people only dream of seeing in person.

Lastly, I must go on the waterfall adventure. I look forward to making my way through the mountains, climbing my way up big hills to catch a glimpse of the Kawasan Falls so that I can feel the water spritzing my face as I stand in awe at one of Mother Natures most beautiful creations. I would love to enjoy a nice picnic lunch just before taking a swim in the cool, crystal blue waters below the falls.

Very few things in this world are as beautiful to me as the wonders that this world has to offer me. I have read that many of the beautiful things that I want to see are within the different Cebu tour that I am considering. I will make memories that will be held dear to me for as long as I live and breathe.

Niagara Falls

Our visit to Niagara Falls, US is not without any hiccups. Actually, the whole vacation was full of hassles from my husband and mom-in-law's flight from Manila back to Dubai, from our split party trip from Dubai to New York and to the weather condition that welcomed us in what was supposed to be spring in New York. This is not the first time we traveled to New York during cold season. However, we didn't expect the extended winter.

We didn't let the weather dampen our spirits. We didn't fly all the way to Buffalo to miss out on the chance to see the wonderful Niagara Falls up close. We did visit the place twice.  The first time was an epic fail. We visited Niagara Falls last April 2 around 09:00 in the morning. We checked the weather and we knew there would be flurries but we had no choice. Like I mentioned earlier, we didn't fly all the way to Buffalo to coop ourselves in the motel. We braced the harsh weather and went. The temperature was around 2 degrees Celsius but it felt more like -9. We were excited and shivering but a bit disappointed when we reached the Niagara Falls area. We could only see mist and plenty of ice chunks floating on the river. The pathways were slippery too so we could not approach the railings. I still managed to take pictures from afar but we all could not stand the bitter cold. It only took us less than 10 minutes outside the wintery like weather and we headed home.

The first time we went last April 2. Epic fail! Weather was too cold. We couldn't stand it.

This is what we saw on April 2- floating chunks of ice, lots of mist, and not to mention, an extremely cold morning to visit Niagara Falls.

I was really sad and upset that I didn't enjoy the view of one of the wonders of the world. I told my family that my bucket list check was just partial as I didn't see the whole area. But you know what, God is really good. He knows how much we all wanted to see Niagara Falls. So, a window of opportunity came last April 4 when the weather let up for a while. It was 10 degrees Celsius! We drove back to Niagara Falls State Park around 2:00 p.m. Well, the cold was still bitter but we could care less. It was perfect the second time around. My hubby dropped us off and headed to Seneca Niagara Casino while my daughter, mom-in-law and I enjoyed Niagara Falls this time.

We took plenty of pictures. We went up the observatory deck. The Maid of the Mist and other attractions were closed for very obvious reasons; there were plenty of ice chunks floating and the operation is only seasonal.

I marveled at the beauty before my eyes. I have to pinch myself several times to make sure I am standing next to the famous Niagara Falls where I once dreamed of seeing when I was five. I was there, taking it all in - the bitter cold and the beauty of the falls.

Better weather this time. Taken on April 4. My princess enjoyed the place so much. She braved the cold weather  to get a closer view of the beautiful Niagara Falls.

Breath taking! One of God's wonderful creation. By the way, those white big stuff are chunks of ice.

Goofing inside the Visitor Center. It was warm inside. We stayed for a while to keep ourselves warm.

This is another check on my bucket list. It has been a dream for me to see the famous falls. To be standing there, marveling at the beauty of God's creation is truly an opportunity I and my family are very thankful for.

Cold Spring In New York

It is supposed to be spring but the weather does not feel like it. We arrived here yesterday and I swear, I don't think it is 11 degrees Celsius. I feel it is lower than that. Today is 11 degrees C but like yesterday, it felt colder and definitely not 11. But night time was so cold at 3 degrees C! No wonder my nose bled and my sinusitis is acting up again.

Last year, the weather was inviting; still cold but manageable. This time it's so cold that I think my normal winter clothing will not hold up. I wonder how it will be like when it's actually winter!

However, despite of the very cold weather, we are still looking forward to see the beautiful flowers in the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. I hope the Cherry Blossoms are already in bloom and some of the spring flowers too. Otherwise, I won't be as happy as I would if I don't see the Cherry Blossoms.

Explore Galapagos in a Galapagos Explorer II Cruise

I have not been to any big cruise ship yet. It is an irony because I used to sell cruise packages to my clients as a travel agent before. Cruises were just taking a good break from the cruise industry dominated by only the famous big-liners like the Royal Caribbean, Cunard and Carnival Cruises. Nowadays, more and more shipping companies are opening lines for cruise travel and this time, it is not only meant for the retirees but also young people who want to enjoy the all-inclusive package a cruise liner has to offer.

There are plenty of routes to choose in today's myriad of cruise travels. One enticing and certainly a captivating route will be the Galapagos. The islands of Galapagos are situated in the Pacific Ocean along the equator and close to Ecuador. If you want to explore the place, you can join the excursion  of the cruise  Galapagos Cruise Ship named Galapagos Explorer II.

The Galapagos Explorer II is a luxury liner that offers only suites which makes the cruise experience more memorable. It boasts of five levels of suites with other amenities such as boutiques, restaurants, hospital, recreation area such as bowling, sun deck and bars for entertainment. The suites have most of the common amenities offered in luxury hotels such as the mini-bar, flat TV, ensuite bathroom with shower and biodegradable toiletries, safety deposit box, spacious closets, satellite communication from your suite, wi-fi, electric outlets for 110/220 voltage, hair dryer, vanity dresser and extra sofa bed for triple accommodation rooms.

Aside from having luxurious accommodation onboard, the Galapagos Explorer II also supports the preservation of the Galapagos Islands; hence, strict rules are outlined when joining the excursion. The cruise includes exploring Galapagos Islands and seeing the inhabitants up-close while maintaining a safe distance so as not to disturb the animals and their habitat.

The rates vary from US$1,550 to 4,500 per person depending on the number of nights and season. However, the rates include the accommodation, excursion to the islands, daily meals (breakfast, buffet, dinner and snacks), and welcome and farewell cocktail. Add ons can be added if you want to include the entrance fee to the Galapagos islands, gratuities and drinks.

Given all the remarkable features of this luxury cruise liner and the adventurous excursion in the most preserved place on earth, this is one cruise that I may consider joining in the future.

Gardens By The Bay in Singapore

Gardens by the Bay in Singapore opened last 29 June 2012. My daughter and I were able to visit it last July 6, 2012 during our vacation in Singapore.

We both love nature and my daughter is a budding shutter bug. So, it was a good thing that we bought the SLR camera so she can take great photos of beautiful flowers and other plants in the conservatories.

Gardens by the Bay (GB) consists of 2 conservatories - The Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest. Both of these giant green houses are part of the attraction of GB. Another spectacular site to behold are the Supertree Groves. They are towering structures of metal and nature. They are vertical gardens which act as canopies to offer shade and wonderful sight both day and night. The GB is a big garden and park at the same time where other sections of the garden is open to the public for free.

I will break down the various areas we visited in GB and hopefully, you'll find the place interesting and amazing as we captured the beautiful scenery and flora in the area.

The Gardens by the Bay is located near the Marina Bay Sands. So, you can also include a visit to the famous new iconic landmark in Singapore, the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and Casino and check out the Skypark and the famous infinity pool of Marina Bay Sands Hotel.
